Moama Bowls

Moama Bowling Club enjoyed a mixed day at the office last Saturday, with division one going down to Tongala 79-64 in the Campaspe Valley Bowls Division.

Missing key players, the best performed rink was skipped by Mark Chaplin, who managed to tie 22-all. Rob Young’s rink fell short by just three shots, while Glen Dorward and his rink lost 30-18 at Tongala.

Divison two prevailed in an entertaining clash at home. Despite Brian Trengrove’s rink going down by 21, Norm Bamford and Vern Rehe’s rinks recorded solid wins to lift the team over the line 75-68.

Back at Tongala, division three was well-supported by Ian McGregor and Stuart Sutton, who led their respective rinks to comfortable wins. Barry Barbary’s rink lost 22-27, but Moama still managed to prevail 78-58.

Division four enjoyed a huge win over Tongala. Neville Bullard, Brian Kirk and Ray Sullivan all skipped their rinks to comprehensive wins. Sullivan’s win was the most impressive, winning 51-11, with the team getting up 122-41.

Away from home, Moama took on Deniliquin in division five. Tom Porter’s rink fell short by just a few shots, but a win from Jim Kirkpatrick’s rink saw the team claim a 50-45 victory.

DISTRICT bowlers competed well in the Victorian Open played in Shepparton and surrounds last week. Congratulations to our team of Veronica Kelly, Pat Schram and Kerryn Evans who reached the quarter-finals of the ladies triples event.

We also extend our congratulations to the Moama pair of Sandra Connolly and Marilyn Stephenson who finished with a silver medal in the ladies pairs.

Weekend pennant resumed on Saturday with four of our five divisions recording strong wins. The division one side travelled to Deniliquin RSL and returned home with a 39-shot victory, and two winning rinks. Division Two competed at home against Lockington and won their match by 23 shots, again with two winning rinks.

The division three and four sides had all winning rinks in their matches. Division three defeated Ky Valley View by 58 shots, and division four recorded their win of 41 shots against Lockington. The division five side played Rich River and had one winning rink but it was not enough, eventually losing by 10 shots.

Members and district bowlers are reminded of our Christmas bonanza tournaments being played in December. The men’s event will be held on Thursday, December 8 and the women’s event will be held on Wednesday, December 14. Lockington bowls

THE women enjoyed ideal conditions on Tuesday for their weekly social bowls. The dynamic Phylis MacFarlane skipped the winning team of Maxine Pavlich and Annette Brereton to an awesome victory over some pretty talented opposition.

There was no midweek pennant due to the Victorian Open held at Shepparton during the week.

A couple of early matches in the club championship were played with Kath Palmer defeating a gallant Anne Lowrie in a close affair while Annette Brereton proved too consistent for lady President Pauline Humbert.

The mens’ club championship draw will be on display this week at the clubhouse.

In the latest round of CVBD weekend pennant both divisions lowered their colours to their respective City of Echuca opponents.

Division two had one winning rink in the 56-70 loss with the Graeme Turner four winning by one shot. The team has dropped to sixth place on the premiership ladder.

Division four lost all rinks in their 48-89 shot disaster. (L Brereton lt C Moss 13-35; G Shawcross lt S Morgan 14-26 while K Main lt J Hollowood 21-28). Division four dropped out of the four and are now placed fifth. Back to the drawing board.

The women are hosting the annual invitation fours on Wednesday. Contact Kath Palmer 5486 2314 for details.Moama RSL indoor bowls
