December 14, 2016

The final round of pennant before the Christmas break once again brought mixed results for City of Echuca teams.

In the midweek competition, division one scored a huge win against Lockington, with all three teams recording strong wins.

This now puts the side within striking distance of the four when play resumes in the New Year.

The division two side travelled to Mathoura and found the going tough, losing by 37 shots, despite Gwenda Ryan’s team of Jill Blake, Elaine Thomas and Jeanette Breen winning their game by 11 shots.

The division three side competed against Tongala and won by eight shots. Heather Trotter, Joan Armstrong, Viv Balfour and Linda Ormando won their game 27-11.

In weekend pennant, the division one side survived a tough encounter against Deniliquin which came down to the very last bowl of the day.

Geoff Beattie’s rink was a game down but drew the final bowl to secure a four-shot win for Echuca.

George Thornley, Geoff Halden, Stan Glasser and Bill Cook combined well to win their game by seven.

The division two side travelled to Rochester and found the home side too strong, eventually losing by 29 overall. Garry Hunter, John O’Brien, Eddie Blampied and Carly Taylor won their game by four.

Division Three also struggled at the weekend, losing by seven to Elmore at home.

Don Hicks and his team of Bill Palmer, Darren Curtis and Gary Trotter continued their good form to win their game by three.

Division four made the long trek to Deniliquin and lost to the home side by 24 shots. Cec Moss, Steve Morgan, Keith McGowan and Jack Shearer combined well to win by 11 shots.

The division five match was a close encounter against Elmore at home, but Echuca eventually won by a single shot with John Catanese, Gary Van Summeren, John Simpson and Col Walker winning their game by five.
