MATHOURA Public School has produced some star athletes in the making.

After a successful day on the track at the Deniliquin District PSSA Cross Country event, five students qualified for the Riverina Cross Country Competition.

CJ Wilson, Ryder Douglas, Briana Bydder, Jemika Cooper and Marcus Moorse competed at the event in Gundagai on June 16.

Marcus Moorse placed fourth in the 11-year-old boys’ 3km event, while Ryder placed 10th in the 10-year-old boys’ 2km event.

Marcus will now represent the Riverina at the upcoming State Cross Country Championships at Eastern Creek, Sydney, on July 21.

This is the second time Marcus has qualified to compete at state level.

Mathoura Public School also held its athletics carnival on Friday.

Primary students competed in a range of track events, including 800m, 200m, 100m and relays, as well as field events.

Parents, grandparents and relatives came along to watch and support the students, with many cooking and serving lunch or helping to run the carnival.

The winning house was Moira on 145 points, followed by Gulpa with 112 points.

Age champions included seniors Alvin Cooper and Jemika Cooper, juniors Ryder Douglas and Shaleah Cooper and sub juniors Matilda Eddy and Xander Douglas.

Twenty three students have qualified for the District PSSA Athletics Carnival on August 11.
