THESE winter months are meant to be a stage of dormancy for bowling clubs, but at Tongala it’s been anything but.
Something seems a little different about this year with scroungers still a regular Sunday afternoon occurrence as well as some indoor bowls during the week.
With the sunny afternoons becoming increasingly prolific the greens will soon be needing a haircut and a roll especially with the club’s opening day and its busiest tournament weekend coming up.
The Tongala Bowling Club opening day will be on Sunday, September 10, beginning at 1pm and more information will be out to members shortly.
The Geoff Cameron singles will again be the springboard into the season commencing September 16-17.
It will be its second running after the success of the first year and it’s a hard weekend not to enjoy.
The week is then added on to with the women’s spring two bowl triples on Wednesday, September 20.
A huge week for the club and one that will set the club on the right track going into the busy pennant season.
An added note for the singles tournament, Sam will be looking for Tongala members to help out on the Sunday morning with marking games of singles.
A list will be put up on the new notice board for anyone who can help with the job or just be there on the days to assist.
The club has again appointed Sam Lyon as official club coach.
‘‘As last year was specifically used for the development of the influx of new members, this season will be different,’’ Lyon said.
‘‘Pennant bowls will be the focus this season with all divisions and Saturday and Sunday teams on the radar.
‘‘Rules, shot selection, building and reading heads and knowing how to play a full game of pennant.
‘‘I’ll be working closely with the selectors for this season and communicating with them in regards to practice and enthusiasm during the week which will be a factor with selection.’’
The club would also like to congratulate Lyon on his selection for the Victorian Country Side.
The side will be taking on South Australia in a Test series being held in Mildura on August 11-13.
The club would also like to pass on congratulations to former member Jarryd Tinning who also made the team.
