Netball finals

DENILIQUIN coach Jodie Sefton couldn’t have been more pleased with her team’s performance after yesterday’s game.

‘‘It was a fantastic team effort,’’ she said.

‘‘Our start set us up for the win and the girls played to perfection as far as our game plan goes.

‘‘Sophie Atkinson is such a strong target for (Echuca United), and our defenders found a way to shut her down and win the game.

‘‘Emily Mildren is only 17-years-old and did an amazing job at goal keeper to stay focused and Eliza Eastman was just as solid in goal defence.

‘‘Outside the ring the girls provided a lot of hands over, which made United work even harder to get the ball in.’’

Sefton said it took a full defensive effort from the whole team to deliver the pressure it did and was pleased with the discipline shown by all her players.

‘‘We’ve got a good clash against Tongala coming up this weekend,’’ she said.

‘‘There’s a few match ups we’ll look to take advantage of, but they’re a good side and have a lot of key players who will be dangerous for us.’’

EAGLES coach Elle Florance put yesterday’s semi-final result against Deniliquin down to a poor start.

Echuca United A grade will now look ahead to next year after their 2017 season came to a close.

‘‘It was a disappointing first quarter,’’ she said.

‘‘We ended up being down by quite a lot at quarter-time and it was always going to be hard playing catch up, especially in finals against a quality opposition.

‘‘We made a few characteristic errors and weren’t as patient with our passing.

‘‘But the girls did well to keep their heads and have the confidence to still throw those balls.’’

Florance was most pleased with the girls desire to keep fighting and play out the game until the final whistle.

And despite the loss, they were still happy with the season as a whole.

‘‘We were coming into this season with a new squad and to get as far as we did was still an achievement,’’ she said.

‘‘There’s still seven teams in finals and from a club perspective that’s a real positive.

‘‘Even though we didn’t manage to win, it’s pleasing to now other teams still have that chance.’’
