City of Echuca

THE JOYCE Thorn Memorial women’s pairs was played at City of Echuca on the weekend of September 2 and 3.

With favourable weather conditions, visitors from clubs far and wide came and enjoyed high-class competition and a friendly two-day tournament.

Many visitors from more southerly areas use this event as the first real bowls activity for their season.

Five games were played and at the conclusion of this, only two teams remained undefeated.

Overall winners were Marj McDonald (Cobram), who partnered with Lee Beattie (Echuca) on Saturday, and Jenny Warfe (Cobram) on Sunday.

The runner-up prizes went to the St Kilda and Middle Park combination of Pam Loosmore and Mary Adams.

The club’s weekend pennant teams will play their first practice match on Sunday against Cohuna Golf.

Practice will be held at the club on Friday afternoon and players were reminded to check the club notice board for all relevant information regarding practice matches and pennant competition.

A pre-season club dinner will be held at the Echuca Workers and Services Club on Tuesday, September 19, at 6pm.

Members and friends are encouraged to support this event with one of our much-valued sponsors, and further details are also on the club notice board.

The club held its opening day for season 2017/18 on Sunday evening.

Senior vice president Russell Shawcross and lady president Pauline Humbert welcomed a fine gathering of members and friends and wished all a successful and happy season of bowls.

The respective club champions, Leanne McInnes and Russell Shawcross, were involved in the official opening as McInnes rolled the first kitty to a short-medium end while Shawcross delivered the first bowl to finish near the kitty.

Members and guests were then treated to an impressive casserole tea followed by sweets.

The first Friday barbecue tea will be held on September 29.

Several members attended local tournaments over the weekend as Leanne McInnes combined with Lyn Snell to win a few games at the Joyce Thorn two-day pairs at City of Echuca Bowls Club.

On Saturday, Ian Johnson, Don Isgro and Russell Shawcross (s) competed in the Rochester Bowls Club two-bowl triples tournament winning three games, losing one and drawing the other.

At the 60 and over competition, played at the Moama Bowling Club on Wednesday, the day was interrupted by rain and the cards were fanned.

Kevin Humbert and Ian Johnson were teamed with a couple of Moama legends and were fortunate to win second prize, another chook for the oven.

The women will hold a triples tournament on Friday commencing at 10am. Contact Kath Palmer 5486 2314 for details.

On Sunday, October 15, the club will stage a mixed pairs two by four by two event starting at 1pm. For entries, please contact Chris Stewart 5486 2607.
