IT IS Echuca racing’s day of days.
The Echuca Cup is on this Sunday at the Echuca Racing Club.
The race has returned to a March running date for the 2018 season.
Echuca Racing Club chief executive Leigh Newton said a lot of planning went into the move.
‘‘We were fortunate enough to work with Racing Victoria and Country Racing Victoria to get the date back to March, which we are really excited about,’’ Newton said.
‘‘The club and all its stakeholders agree that this date is the best date for the future of the cup.
‘‘As a racing club, we see that we are a much better chance at getting people to come up to our event if we hold it in the warmer months, last year when the cup was in May it was cold and rained on the day.
‘‘It was a logical decision really to have the event held in autumn and we have already seen the difference in bookings.’’
Newton said there was already a noticeable difference in bookings.
‘‘We’ve had a lot more bookings for the marquee, a lot more umbrella packages so that’s something that wouldn’t have happened in the colder months.’’
The main event is the Moama Bowling Club Echuca Cup.
The race — which carries $44,000 for the winner — is run over 1400 metres.
Irish horse Zerpour set the race record in 1998, running a minute and 21 seconds.
Newton said it would be a fantastic day for racing.
‘‘It’s expected to be a pretty warm day, but not too bad,’’ Newton said.
‘‘It’s the perfect day for racing.’’
The track is also expected to be great under foot.
‘‘The track has gone under renovation quite recently. We expect with the work that has been put into the course it should be really nice under foot for the runners, which will make for a great day’s racing.’’
