Tigers leap over Blues on ladder

KATAMATITE has overtaken Picola United on the A grade netball ladder after a thrilling four-goal victory over the Blues on Saturday.

The Tigers moved up to seventh in the Picola and District Netball League — one spot above the Blues — after they came away with the goods, 49-45.

It leaves the Blues clinging onto the last finals spot on the ladder, with two wins and four losses, having also had the bye, after seven rounds.

The result reinforces the keys to success outlined by United coach Leesa Hoopell earlier in the season, which includes beating the teams close by on the ladder.

‘‘We just didn’t get over the line, we were up at half time but not by much, and the injuries are taking a toll,’’ she said.

‘‘We had to re-arrange a few positions with our main goal attack out and our other goal attack hurt her calf yesterday — so we’re having a horror run at the moment.’’

United is yet to prove itself as a finals contender, having beaten Mathoura and bottom of the league Berrigan. Both sides are not in the top eight.

Another testing fixture awaits United in the form of ninth-placed Rennie away from home on Saturday.

‘‘That’s the second one we realistically should have won, I think. And now we have to play a lot of catch up netball just to make finals, so it’ll be interesting to see how the team goes,’’ she said.

Hoopell’s key to success of winning against those around you must come into play, and come in soon, otherwise United will find itself outside the finals spots come Sunday morning.

United has scored the fifth-most goals in the league (276), but at the same time has conceded the fifth-most amount of goals in the PDNL (274).

It is obvious to say scoring more goals than you concede wins games. But in United’s case it will be more important to keep Rennie out than it will be for their shooters to be on form.

Following on from Saturday’s game will be a chance to prove the side is finals material when Waaia comes to town. The high-flying Bombers sit third with five wins from six games.

United’s match against Rennie will be played away from home, and will start at 2pm.
