IT DOESN’T matter how you win them, so long as you win.
That’s the message Picola United coach Leesa Hoopell told her team after they escaped from Yarroweyah with a seven-goal win over minnows the Hoppers on Saturday.
The hapless Hoppers have struggled immensely in the Picola and District Netball League this year, securing just the one win from nine attempts.
But the Blues gave them a fighting chance to make that two from nine as they made poor decisions in the mid-court, turning over the ball regularly and lending the Hoppers chances in the final third.
The seventh-placed team, in line for a finals berth, struggled all day against the 13th-placed side.
All is not lost, said Hoopell, it was just a speed bump as her side begins to re-align with the return of a key player.
‘‘We were rapt to win but it wasn’t pretty,’’ she said.
‘‘Our defence was fantastic all day, they killed it down there and defended and intercepted well, but we lost it a lot in the mid court.
‘‘(Yarroweyah is) a very good side, they took away a lot of space from us and forced us into a lot of errors. Our first half was pretty good, we were up by around 12 at half time, but we made a lot of errors in the last two,’’ she said.
Key attacker Leslee Grame made her return from a five-week injury, but the rest of the side was out of touch with the game plan, Hoopell said.
‘‘The mid court made a lot of mistakes. In all honesty they’re quite a good side and we went in knowing they’d be strong but in the end we’re glad we got the four points,’’ she said.
Next up on the fixture list is Katunga, who sit sixth with a 5-4 record.
‘‘We need to take the points there if we want to be serious about finals this year, we basically need to win to stay in contention for finals.
‘‘We need to go back to basics in the attacking end this week just to enforce the way we play. Because at the moment when there’s a bit of pressure we lose our way.
‘‘We’ll do some hard training and we’ll be right I’m sure,’’ Hoopell said.
That match against Katunga will be played in Picola on Saturday. The game starts at 2pm.
