Moama fire put out

By Riverine Herald

UPDATE, 11.45AM:

Fire units from Moama and Echuca have extinguished a fire in Moama’s industrial estate this morning.

It is believed the Eddy St fire might have been started by someone burning off in the vicinity.

At its peak it forced the evacuation of the Goodstart Early Learning Centre, which saw children in cots sheltering on lawns in the street.

Traffic, which was gridlocked on both sides of the river, is now moving again as police reopen streets in Moama.

The cause of the fire is still being investigated and there has been no estimate of damage released at this stage.

UPDATE, 11.10AM:

The fire in Eddy St is reported to be under control.

It is believed it started with someone burning off rubbish in a 44-gallon drum.

The number of fire units attending and the need to block some roads in Moama has caused gridlock around the bridge, with movement slowed to a crawl.

EARLIER: A fire has broken out in Eddy St, Moama.

Units are just arriving at the scene.

The neighbouring childcare centre in Martin St is understood to have been evacuated, with cots moved into the street for safety.

More to come.
