Moama claims bushfire relief clash

MOAMA has claimed bragging rights in its practice match with Mathoura.

The two sides both blew out the cobwebs ahead of their 2020 seasons, with more than 30 players taking the field for both sides in the clash in front of a strong crowd at Jack Eddy Oval.

But the result was far from the most important part of the evening, with a fundraiser held for the Corryong Football and Netball Club taking centre stage.

Mathoura sponsorship co-ordinator Liv Brownfield said her club could not have been happier with how the night went.

“It was everything we wanted and more,” she said.

“We had a fantastic turnout, so many local businesses coming on board to make the night a success as well. The atmosphere at the ground was incredible.

“Its something we, as a club, have never really done before. To be involved in something so meaningful and give back where we can.

“We know how tough it would be for our community if we were impacted by fires, how long it would take to rebuild, so it meant a lot to us to be able to help out a community who really needed it.”

Moama president Matt Lake said the match was a great indicator for both sides.

“It was scrappy at times,” he said.

“Both teams had a lot of really good signs during the game, there are things both sides will work on, but there was a lot of good stuff to take away from it.

“The signs are there, I think both sides are going to improve this year.”

Like Brownfield, Lake was grateful to the community members for their work.

“It was fantastic to see the community get right behind the event,” he said.

“It means an awful lot to us. We didn't hesitate when Mathoura asked us to come on board, but we also didn't expect it was going to be as big as it became.

“It speaks to how great our community is — they desperately want to do their bit to help out those in need. It makes us really proud to be a part of this area.”

Both clubs thanked their major sponsor, Moama Bowling Club, as well as the multiple local businesses who helped make the night a reality.

But they reserved their biggest thanks for the wider community.

“We're still figuring out exactly how much the night raised, but it's looking like a really successful event,” Brownfield said.

“We can't thank everyone who got out and supported the night enough.”
